The third gold medal in the series of gold issues dedicated to Franz Joseph I is a replica of a historic Hungarian coin – the gold 4-gulden piece from 1874, originally minted at the Kremnica Mint during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I.
The motif dates back to the period following the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, when Hungary gained greater autonomy – including the right to issue coins with distinct Hungarian inscriptions and symbols.
The year 1874 marked the beginning of a more noticeable divergence between Hungarian and Austrian gold coinage – both linguistically and heraldically. It was also a time when the Kremnica Mint (then one of the main mints of Hungary) firmly established its position as the center of Hungarian coin production.
The 1874 gold 4-gulden coin is considered a significant symbol of monarchical stability and economic renewal after the turbulent years of revolution and political transition.
Mintage: 300 pieces – limited edition.
