Battles in the history of the world – Battle of Vienna (1683) – Habsburgs vs. Ottoman Empire

silver coin

A serie of silver coins depicting the most famous battles of the world. We will offer you chronologically 15 coins with scenes from battles and battle clashes that have influenced world history. As the tenth battle, we present to you the Battle of Vienna, which was one of the key battles in the Turkish wars between the Habsburgs and the Ottoman Empire. We can also consider the battle as the most important battle of the 17th century, which had as its cause the end of Turkish expansion in Central Europe and, on the contrary, the strengthening of the influence of the Habsburg Monarchy. After the sixteen-year Great Turkish War, the Habsburg Empire gradually took control of southern Hungary and Transylvania, which were largely free of Turkish forces.

Plague columns – stone witnesses of victory over epidemics – Plague column in  Trenčín

shape commemorative medal

Plague columns are not just works of art. In addition to their artistic value, they also carry a historical legacy. They were often built as a sign of thanksgiving for ending a plague or other epidemic. From this interesting series, we present the next one in a row, this time with the motif of the plague column in Trenčín. The medal is interesting not only for its motif, but also for its oval shape. The Plague Column of the Holy Trinity in Trenčín was built in 1712 by Count Mikuláš Ilešházi. The pillar probably comes from the workshop of the Viennese master stonemasons, who at that time were working in Trenčín on the reconstruction of the Jesuit church (today the Piarist church), which was destroyed by fire in 1708. The city of Trenčín had this monument reconstructed as part of the comprehensive reconstruction of the Peace Square. After four medals, in the following years we will introduce you to 3 more plague columns in this series: the statue of the Holy Trinity in Trnava, the Immaculate Conception in Poprad and the Marian column in Banská Bystrica.
